Hybrid Solar Kitchens ~ with LPG backup

Hybrid Solar Kitchens (with LPG back up)

According to reports published by The Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP, ‘Energy Road Map to Achieving MDG Targets –Kenya Sectoral Energy Requirements, 2006’), ‘the stage has been reached where the rate of the use of firewood has outstripped that of biomass replacement, and the situation is bound to get worse in the years ahead unless drastic measures are taken’.

Given Kenya’s large wood fuel deficit that now stands at 15.6 million cubic meters (2023), low tree cover (<10%, low terrestrial capacity for biomass generation), and high rate of deforestation (6, 290 ha in 2022, Global Forest Watch), it is unlikely that the situation will be arrested through a single supply-side intervention in the form of tree planting and in the absence of a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to wood fuel as deployed in tea processing and large-scale cooking in the education sector.
